PAM Flocculant: a powerful chemical product for industrial water treatment

Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a hydrophilic synthetic polymer widely used in water treatment processes. It is primarily used as a flocculant and coagulant, a chemical agent that causes suspended particles in water to aggregate into larger flocs, thereby aiding their removal through clarification or filtration. Depending on the quality of the wastewater, use cationic, anionic, or non-ionic PAM. Polyacrylamide offers several advantages in water treatment, including its effectiveness over a wide range of pH, temperature, and turbidity ranges. The coagulation effect can be tested using Jar tests or turbidity measurement.

Polyacrylamide can be widely used in industrial water treatment, sewage treatment, wastewater treatment, etc. In water treatment plants, polyacrylamide is used in various processes, including primary and secondary clarification, filtration, and disinfection. During the primary clarification process, it is added to raw water to promote the settling of suspended solids, which are then removed by sedimentation or flotation. In secondary clarification, polyacrylamide is used to further clarify the treated water by removing residual suspended solids and adsorbed organic matter.

The working principle of the polyacrylamide flocculant is: after adding the PAM solution, PAM adsorbs on the particles, forming bridges between them. In the original pool, it adheres to form larger flocs, and the water body becomes turbid at this time. After a large number of flocs grow and become thicker, they will migrate and sink slowly over time, and the upper layer of the raw water will become clear. This aggregation process improves the settling characteristics of the particles, making them easier to remove during clarification or filtration. Polyacrylamide is often used in combination with other coagulants and flocculants to achieve optimal clarification and filtration performance.

Polyacrylamide also plays an important role in water filtration. It is often used as a pre-filter in filters or other physical filtration methods to remove suspended solids and turbidity. By improving the removal of these particles, polyacrylamide helps ensure a clearer, purer filtrate.

Polyacrylamide is a relatively stable and non-toxic polymer that breaks down through natural processes or biological treatment methods. It should be noted that a spilled solution will cause the floor to become very slippery, which may lead to a fall.

However, the amount of PAM used depends on the type of wastewater and the content of suspended solid particles, as well as the presence of other chemicals, acids, and contaminants in the water. These factors may affect the coagulation effect of PAM, so reasonable adjustments need to be made during use. PAM products with different molecular weights, ionic degrees, and dosages should be carefully selected for different types of wastewater.
